Soul Music of the 1960s-Julie Demuynck

This paper will examine the emergence of soul music in the major cities of America during the 1960s. Soul music transformed the sound of gospel and rhythm and blues into a funk and disco sound. The paper will examine the influence of James Brown, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes and similar artists’ affect on the cultures of Detroit, New Orleans, and other large cities at the time. Since the 1960s, soul music has influenced a diverse variety of artists from different genres of music. This article will focus on the identity of the soul music, and its affect on people of the time period and the generations to come.
