Melvin Backman: Screw Music

For the second feeder, I will be focusing on the screw music subsection of the Houston rap scene. It's based around a remixing technique created by one DJ Screw through which a DJ slows a record and uses a mixer to "chop" the record at strategic points. It is a fascinating rap subculture, uniquely influence and perpetuated by a mix of music, drugs and cars. Even with major label interest in Houston rap circa 2004, it has managed to stay very insular over the course of 20 years with similar themes and names holding the scene down. Screw music presents a subculture that is unique in its makeup and seemingly timeless.
