The Boy Band Culture of the 1990s

Music allows individuals to actively live out what they believe in and help them identify personal attributes that previously were not apparent. Music has this capability because of its versatile nature. Different genres such as rap, pop, and classic rock are only a glimpse into the versatility of music. One subgenre that has stood out to me is the boy band culture of the 1990s, who where originally inspired by the late 1980s band New Kids on the Block . Unlike many other genres, the boy band classification did not typically entail the use of musical instruments by the artists. Since instrumentals did not play a large role in the development of their music, groups such as N’Sync and the Backstreet Boys relied mainly on their vocals and melodies in order to appeal to their mainly female audience. Although it may seem that the culture was monotonous, it gained much strength within the 1990s and opened the door to different forms of music that are present today.
