Sam Kirby: Feeder Two Topic

For my topic, I will be investigating the role of metal in identity development in high school age males. Metal is widely disregarded as legitimate creative expression because it is an "underground" genre listened to by a seemingly narrow range of people. The "angry or violent, depressed white kid" is seen as the stereotypical metal fan. While metal is certainly not the typical musical genre, there is a lot more to the music than most people would bother to find out. In fact, many fans regard metal as more of a movement than a genre. Metal fans come from all races, regions, and socioeconomic backgrounds, but despite their differences they all seem to share a common experience. So why do millions of people around the world enjoy this seemingly bizarre, what some would call "evil," music? I believe the reason is a common social identity that gives many strength and peace, despite those outside the music who don't seem to understand.
